I know quite a bucket load of people who take their internet connection for granted as long as it loads up Farmville. In reality you might be deprived of the full potential of your internet connection by background bottlenecks(unless you live in India where speeds are retarded) which I will break down article by article. For now, we will talk about DNS.
What is DNS?
DNS is a computer system by itself whose sole purpose is to convert IP addresses into meaningful names. For example, one of Google’s IP address is 74.125.19.104. DNS holds millions of IP addresses like these and their associated Domain Name. In this case, google.com. When you key in google.com in your browser, your DNS server (usually your service provider) looks up for the website server with the help of the IP address that is associated with the Domain Name.

Chances are, at the moment, you are connecting online with your ISP’s preset DNS server which may not be fast enough. But before we assume that your ISP’s DNS is crappy (which most of the times is), we will run a quick test.
Download namebench.
Namebench is a free utility that determines which DNS is faster for you without having to mess around with network settings. Just download the setup file for your platform and run the program. Once its finished, it will open a detailed report in your browser. For a better result, run it twice.
Change the “Number of tests” to something <70 for quick results.
What next?
Using external DNS service of course. Now we have two popular DNS services worth mentioning – Google Public DNS & OpenDNS. Google has just started out their service and going head-to-head with the more experienced OpenDNS. I prefer OpenDNS because of its features, speed and security.
OpenDNS has a neat guide on how to install DNS IP addresses. Its the same for Google Public DNS, just replace OpenDNS IP addresses with Google’s. [OpenDNS guide]
OpenDNS IP addresses
208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220
Google Public DNS IP addresses
8.8.8.8
8.8.4.4
